(vii) Modern_languages. The committee agreed that provision should be made for practical instruction in French.

It was thought possible that Portuguese studies might be developed because of the importance of the Portuguese element in the local population and because of the importance of Portugal in early relations with the Far East. This was regarded as a matter for later development.

(viii) Geography. The Committee recommended that the staff should be increased to:

It was felt that there would be a case for developing this department particularly in view of the needs of China for teaching in Geography and in that case further staff might be ne sued in the future.

B. Department of Education.

(ix) The Committee emphasized the importance of this Department not only for the training of teachers for the Colony but because of the very large part it might play in the training of teachers of English in China proper. Sir George Moss drew attention to the high importance attributed by the Chinese Ministry of Education to good teaching of English. It was felt that the University Department of Education might become a major centre for the training of such teachers who would come to Hong Kong after completing degree courses in Chinese Universities. was suggested that immediately, the following staff would be required but that with the anticipated extension of the training of students from China considerable additions to the staff would be called for hereafter.
